At some time in their school career many pupils will need some form of learning support. Some pupils need help with basic skills and others may need help turning ‘B’ grades into ‘A’s. At Pool, we always try to support pupils within the classroom rather than putting them into a special class. However, should a pupil need individual help, she/he will go to the Learning Support Department where specialist equipment and experienced teachers are available.
The Learning Support Department offer additional support through after school homework club, handwriting improvement groups, spelling and communication workshops, social skills groups and intensive reading recovery groups. The room is fully equipped with five computers, three netbooks, spell checkers and a range of additional support materials.
The hugely successful reading and spelling recovery lessons are based on the latest synthetic phonics programme. Any young person who has a reading age below 9 years or a spelling age below 10.6 will automatically be included in this programme. The department also offers screening for dyscalculia and can support pupils with advice on developing good coping skills. The dedicated TA team in the Maths and English departments offer focused intervention to support and improve levels.
